In 1958 Columbia records assembled an all-star cast for a studio recording, conducted by Lehman Engel and produced by Goddard Lieberson. There's a great article about it here, which hints that Frederick Loewe supervised the recording. Unfortunately, though there was a brief re-release on CD a few years ago, it is now only available on used vinyl or very expensive used CD.
As part of an outstanding series of complete recordings of musicals, conductor John McGlinn took a cast of current stars into a London studio. That recording is still available, among others from Amazon.
So... if you want to buy, the McGlinn is the way to go. We will be using it for dance rehearsals. It's the most complete out there. But for authenticity and glorious performances, your dramaturg says the Engel all the way.
Until recently, the McGlinn recording was on YouTube. It seems to have mostly disappeared. Only Almost Like Being in Love is still there. If anyone finds any others, please email us. The Engel recording is still there. Here are links to those recordings.
